Specialised support for parents

Parent burnout and the mental load

You are the one who knows when the snacks are running low, when the permission slip is due, when the next dentist appointment is, and when your partner's mother's birthday is.

You are the one who remembers that your toddler does not like the green cup. You are the only one tracking everything, and you are exhausted by a kind of tiredness that sleep does not touch. The mental load is real, the resentment is real, and the fact that you are still functional is not the same as you being okay. This is the page for the parent who is running the household and slowly disappearing inside it.

Who this is for

Some of this might sound familiar.

Not a checklist to pass or fail. Just the shapes this tends to take, in case it helps to see them named.

You are the household project manager and nobody hired you.

You cannot quit, and the meeting never ends.

Your partner is helpful when you ask.

Asking is part of what is exhausting you.

You have read the books.

You have made the colour-coded lists. The work is still on your plate.

You are tired of being the only adult who knows where everything is.

The resentment is louder than it used to be, and you are not sure what to do with it.

You used to enjoy things.

You cannot remember which things. Wanting things feels like one more thing to manage.

You suspect this is not just exhaustion.

You suspect you are burning out.

If you see yourself in even one of these, you are in the right place.

What this might feel like

What this might feel like

In their own words. Some of what parents say, before they have a name for it.

I am the only person in this house who knows where anything is. I am tired of being the answer.

He says "just tell me what to do," and I want to scream, because telling him what to do is the work.

I do not remember what I like anymore. I am not sure I remember how to want things.

How I work

How I work with parent burnout and the mental load

We do not start by adding more to your plate. The work of this kind of therapy is the opposite of "you need a self-care routine." You already know about self-care routines; the problem is the bandwidth. So we start by taking inventory, in your body and in your week, of what you are actually carrying and where it is coming from. Half of what most clients are managing is not theirs to manage. We figure out which half together.

The methods are practical and specific. Internal Family Systems for the part of you that has been the responsible one for so long it does not know how to stop, and the part of you that resents the role and does not know where else to put the resentment. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for the automatic thoughts that have you double-checking everything. Polyvagal-informed work for a nervous system that has been in management mode for months or years. Attachment-aware perspective for the partner dynamic, your own family-of-origin patterns about who carries the load, and the small ways your kids may already be learning the same role you are exhausted by.

You will not be diagnosed by me. You will not be told that you need better systems or a better partner conversation, although those may come up. We will work at the pace your nervous system can hold, and we will be honest about which changes belong to you, which belong to the people around you, and which belong to a culture that asks too much of mothers and pretends not to.

Frequently asked questions

Indirectly, sometimes. The work focuses on you, because that is where the work actually lives. What changes in therapy is not usually your partner; it is your sense of what is yours to carry, your capacity to ask for what you actually need rather than what is easiest to ask for, and your tolerance for the discomfort of letting some things go undone. Those changes often shift the partner dynamic in ways that are bigger than handing over a to-do list. If at some point a two-parent session would help, I offer those too, and we can talk about whether it fits.

This is the most honest question on this page, and the answer is that most clients arrive with exactly as little energy as you have right now. The work is paced for that. You do not have to do homework between sessions. You do not have to come prepared. You arrive, and we start where you are. The first sessions are usually slower and more reflective than the later ones, and many clients describe leaving sessions feeling lighter, not more depleted.

No. The mental load shows up in the partnership, but it usually started earlier and goes deeper than that. We work with the partner dynamic when it is useful, and we work with the rest of you the rest of the time. The longer the work goes, the more you will find that what looked like a partner problem was also a self problem, and the self problem is where the real movement is.
